Black leopard safari in Laikipia Kenya guided wildlife photography experience with Dan Peel

Black Leopard Safaris Laikipia, Kenya

One of the most consistent opportunities in Africa to photograph melanistic leopards - built on years of tracking known individuals.

Plan Your Safari

More Than Just a Sighting

Laikipia is one of the very few places in Africa where melanistic leopards can be seen with genuine consistency — not by chance, but through long-term tracking of known individuals.

These safaris are built around that reality. Time in the field is flexible, allowing us to stay with sightings as behaviour unfolds, rather than rushing between locations.

The focus is not simply on seeing a black leopard, but on understanding movement, anticipating behaviour, and positioning correctly to create truly meaningful photographic opportunities.

Built on Experience

This is not a trip built around luck.

Over the years, I’ve spent thousands of hours working in this region, following individual leopards and understanding how they move through the landscape.

That experience allows us to approach each sighting with intent — positioning early, staying patient, and allowing natural behaviour to unfold.

The result is longer, more relaxed encounters and far stronger photographic opportunities.

How the Safari Works

Each day is structured around time in the field rather than a fixed schedule. Early mornings and late afternoons are prioritised, with flexibility to adapt depending on leopard movement and conditions.

We work with known territories and individuals, allowing us to make informed decisions rather than relying on luck.

Vehicles are kept to a minimum, positioning is carefully managed, and sightings are approached patiently — often spending extended time with a single individual to allow behaviour to unfold naturally.

This approach consistently produces longer, more relaxed encounters and significantly stronger photographic opportunities.

  • Over 300 black leopard sightings personally

  • 4+ years tracking Giza and surrounding individuals

  • One of the highest melanistic leopard densities in Africa

  • Low vehicle pressure and controlled positioning

  • Deep behavioural understanding built over time

Why Laikipia?

Laikipia offers one of the most productive leopard environments in Africa.

A combination of habitat, prey density, and low vehicle pressure allows leopards to move naturally, while still giving us the ability to track and anticipate behaviour.

Unlike many areas in Africa where sightings rely heavily on luck, Laikipia allows for consistent tracking of known individuals, including melanistic leopards.

It is also one of the few regions where melanistic leopards are regularly encountered.

Designed for Photography

This is not just about seeing a leopard — it’s about creating images that are rarely possible elsewhere.

This safari is built specifically for photographers - not just to see a black leopard, but to create images that are rarely possible elsewhere.

We focus on light, background, and positioning - ensuring each sighting is approached with intent.

Time in the field remains flexible, allowing us to stay with subjects when conditions are right, rather than working to a rigid schedule.

I work closely with each guest to refine camera settings, positioning, and approach - so you are ready when the moment happens.

An Ethical Approach

No crowding. No pressure. No rushed sightings.

Respect for the animals comes first.

Sightings are approached carefully to avoid pressure or disruption, allowing natural behaviour to continue.

This approach builds long-term trust and leads to more authentic and rewarding encounters.

Groups are kept small to allow for flexibility, better positioning, and a more personal experience in the field.
